Microsoft launching UK-centric MSN Video Player
A deal has been struck with the corporate arm of the BBC
Microsoft is experimenting with a new niche for MSN Video. A deal has been struck with the corporate arm of the BBC to allow Microsoft to start streaming some of its popular TV shows through a video player called MSN Video Player (MVP). A deal has also been struck with All3Media which has popular shows on Channel 4.
The BBC has its own online video player called iPlayer which is advert free and funded by tax payers in the UK. Microsoft’s MVP will be ad-funded, however, with both pre-roll and regular advert breaks during content depending on how long a show runs for. It’s also interesting to note that Ashley Highfield is launching the MSN Video service for Microsoft in the UK, while his previous role was at the BBC launching iPlayer.
MVP will go through a six month trial phase and the content shown will be staggered after specific time frames depending on where the content comes from (BBC, BBC Worldwide, or All3Media).
The UK is just a convenient starting point due to a lack of competition and the proven desire for online content demonstrated by the popularity of the iPlayer.
