New Broadcasting Code launched
Ofcom has revised the Broadcasting Code which governs what can be aired on TV and radio.
The 2009 Broadcasting Code refreshes aspects of the rules that have been in force since July 2005.
It continues to set out what is acceptable to broadcast and covers such areas as the protection of under-18s, harm and offence, fairness and privacy and commercial references in programmes.
However, the new code clarifies rules around audience competitions and voting, as well as the broadcast of sexual material.
The revised Code also incorporates the requirements of the European Audiovisual Media Services (AVMS) Directive which must be implemented by 19 December 2009.
The AVMS Directive prohibits product placement in all children’s programmes produced after that date.
Ofcom also has in place a number of rules relating to offensive language and the watershed.
The rules are applied on the basis of our understanding of the attitudes of viewers and listeners, and this is underpinned by audience research.
